Whether sitting on the front porch of your Beavers Bend Adventures cabin or going on a self-guided waterfall tour, there is no shortage of ways to take in the incredible scenery all around you. Escaping to Broken Bow is the perfect retreat for everyone, from families on a summer getaway to friends enjoying a much-needed break from life. Perhaps one of the best-kept secrets in this area is Little River National Wildlife Refuge, a great addition to any outdoor adventure itinerary.
A Guide to Visiting This Oklahoma Wildlife Refuge
Established in 1987, Little River National Wildlife Refuge became the 438th refuge in the country. Its 14-216 acres protect one of the largest bottomland hardwood forests that remain in the state. Today, this refuge still works to preserve that forest, which is home to migratory birds and waterfowl.
When planning your day at this natural attraction, there is no shortage of adventures to choose from.
- Hunting is allowed within the refuge for things like white-tailed deer, raccoon, coyotes, and more as long as it is in accordance with the refuge seasons.
- Cast your line for catfish, bluegill, crappie, and largemouth bass. There is a year-round fishing season and several different refuge waterways to fish from.
- Lace up your hiking boots and explore the miles of trails. There are roughly 1.74 miles of primitive walking trails and countless other trail and boardwalk options.
One of the best things to do during your visit is wildlife viewing and birdwatching. See if you can spot one of the 11-state champion trees found in the forest. A great spot to view and photograph wildlife is the Duck Roost Slough observation deck. There are over 100 species of birds that spend some of all of the year within this area. Charge up your camera, grab your binoculars and birding book, and see how many species you can spot.
